Who are we?

We are a group of Reformed Christians that earnestly desire a Confessional Reformed church established in south Orange County. To that end we meet on a regular basis to pray, fellowship and study God’s Word. Our goal is to have a church plant begin with worship services on Sundays and thus establish a vibrant community of saints.

What kind of oversight do we have?

Our overseeing consistory is that of the Oceanside United Reformed Church. Rev. Jonathan Moersch has been an associate pastor there since February 2009. Some families from our group are members at OURC’s sister church: Christ Reformed Church in Anaheim. The United Reformed Churches in North America (URCNA) is a federation of Reformed churches that faithfully hold to the Three Forms of Unity (“The Belgic Confession of Faith,” “The Heidelberg Catechism” & “The Canons of Dort”).

What does your worship look like?

Our desire is to worship our Triune God in “reverence and awe” (Heb 12:28) as well as “in Spirit and truth” (John 4:24). To that end we seek to worship God as He has commanded us in His word: God speaks, we respond. The preaching of the word has central place. The Psalms are given a principle place in singing. The Lord’s Supper is frequently observed. In short, we seek to do all things decently and in order to the glory of God alone.

How are children taught in church?

In their baptism, our children are taught from the earliest of age that they belong to Jesus. Their faith is encouraged to grow and mature as they worship with their family alongside the rest of the people of God. Along with being taught the Scriptures, children are also instructed in the Heidelberg Catechism so that they may know the basics of the Christian faith. When they mature, they ought to know not only what they believe, but, why they believe it.

What kind of accountability do you offer?

We believe that pastors and elders have real spiritual authority given to them by Christ (Mt 16:19; 18:17-20; Heb 13:17). This spiritual oversight can be of no benefit, however, unless people are willing to submit to it. For that reason, we see membership in the local church as both a privilege and a responsibility.

Starting March 13th, we will be meeting each Sunday evening at 5PM for a time of prayer, fellowship and the study of God's word. Our new location is the San Felipe de Jesus Chapel in Capistrano Beach, located at 26010 Domingo Ave. Check back for more updates!

What is God's will for your life? Many Christians agonize over finding the answer to this question. Popular theology suggests that we ought to be listening to a "still, small voice" leading us in every decision we make... even which pair of shoes to wear! When Paul tells his Ephesian readers to "try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord," and to "understand what the will of the Lord is," I don't think that is what he had in mind.

Like father, like son. Of all the clichés that are most commonly used, perhaps this one contains the most truth. For better or for worse, children invariably take on the characteristics of their parents. This ought also to be the case with our heavenly Father. Paul instructs his Ephesian readers to "be imitators of God as beloved children" (5:1).

As children, it always seemed so challenging to get along with your siblings. Just too much time together can just be grating on the nerves. The same can be said with your relationships in church. With all the lofty theological ideals conveyed in Scripture, a surprising amount of the New Testament is simply dedicated to tell Christians to get along with one another.

Out with the old, in with the new. In my house, it seems like we're constantly trying to get rid of old and useless stuff. The same is true with our spiritual lives. The Bible teaches that we are new creations in Christ, that being said, however, the old man still rears his ugly head. Paul tells us in Ephesians 4 that we must constantly be putting to death our sinful inclinations and making alive our newly created persons by the Spirit.

"Why don't you act your age?!" This is something that I'm sure many of us have heard in our lifetime. The fact is, maturity is something that should come with age. This is no more crucial than with our Christian walks. So often, when we should be spiritually mature, we are no more than babes. This is something that the apostle Paul wrote against time and time again. In Ephesians 4 he speaks about the church being built up as the body of Christ and achieving a "mature manhood" (ESV).

Everybody likes to get gifts. Whether big or small, cheap or expensive, it's just nice to get things that you didn't have to pay for. Paul tells us in Ephesians 4 that when Christ ascended after his resurrection, he gave the institutional church gifts. These gifts are what enables the church to exist and grow, without which the church cease to be. Those gifts are office bearers.

Any time we see the word "therefore" in Scripture, we ought to ask what it's there for? So when Paul writes in Ephesians 4, "I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called..." we should keep in mind all that has preceded this verse. For three chapters, Paul has been explaining in vivid detail the great and glorious news of the gospel. Only then does Paul speak to how we ought to respond to it. The imperative [Law] flows out of the indicative [Gospel].

"Why do Christians need to pray?" This question is asked by the Heidelberg Catechism to which it responds: "Because it is the chief part of the thankfulness which God requires of us; and because God will give his grace and Spirit only to such, as earnestly and without ceasing, beg them from him, and render thanks unto him for them." In other words, prayer gets things done. This is not through the power of prayer, but through the power of God, who is pleased to use prayer to accomplish his plans.
